Prevalence of PFAS 'forever chemical' in the environment likely significantly underestimated: study

In an ABC article today Australian UNSW researchers revealed that "branched PFOA," a carcinogenic PFAS chemical, is more prevalent than expected in firefighting foams previously used nationwide. This finding suggests PFAS contamination, particularly in waterways, is significantly underestimated.

The impact highlights the urgent need for broader monitoring, as environmental transformations can double PFAS concentrations over time.

UNSW researchers are exploring zinc and vitamin B12 treatments for PFAS removal, though they produce toxic fluoride byproducts.
